For the beginning bonsai gardener, nothing beats the bald cypress bonsai as a tree to start with. Making the decision to purchase the bald cypress bonsai is the easy part. You have two options when selecting your bonsai. Start from a seedling or choose an already grown tree. Bald cypress bonsai trees are found in the southeast typically in swampy areas, and can also be purchased from garden centers online and in your local area.

* Did you know? The bald cypress is the official tree of the state of Louisiana!

Caring for Your Bald Cypress Bonsai

The bald cypress bonsai tree needs lots of water, light, and room to grow. A tip to keep in mind is that unlike most bonsai trees that prefer soil that drains water quickly, bald cypress bonsai are swamp natives and like a wet, humid environment. Now, this doesn’t mean that you have to hook up a constant watering system to your tree. Daily watering should suffice.

You will want to place your tree outdoors in a location that will receive the benefit of full sunlight throughout the day. While you can grow the bald cypress bonsai indoors, it is recommended as an outdoor bonsai tree. If you do choose to grown indoors, select a location near a window that takes advantage of sunlight for most of the day.

* Did you know? The bald cypress bonsai is a great choice for beginners! Sunlight and lots of water are all you need to begin!

Bald Cypress Bonsai Maintenance

Shaping tools will be required immediately if you chose to start with a grown tree. These tools are required to cultivate and shape your tree to your desired form. There is a pattern that you should adhere to when shaping your bald cypress bonsai. Height should be equal to base width times six (H = Wx6). Regular pruning will be necessary to maintain your desired form.

With the right amount of care and devotion, you will achieve a beautiful bald cypress bonsai tree. Remember though, mastering the art of bonsai is not an overnight process. Experience is only gained by making that first cut. Don’t be afraid, time will heal all wounds!

Coniferous Types Of Bonsai Trees

There are numerous types of bonsai trees, but it is the coniferous that is the most popular and is the most practical choice for a beginner. Coniferous trees have the look of antiquity even at a young age. Most people who are asked to imagine a bonsai tree will decidedly conjure up a tree that looks like one of the pine trees. Coniferous trees are so called because they usually bear cones for propagation.

These types of bonsai trees are those that are usually evergreen and do not lose their leaves or even change color when the seasons change. So you are left with a bonsai tree that is perennially green and has less work for you to do because they need less pruning and maintenance. Coniferous bonsai trees tend to be slow growers and might only need a root pruning every two to three years.

Juniper Types Of Bonsai Trees

Junipers are trees under the coniferous variety. These trees usually have a hard peeling bark and they also produce cones for seed pods. Junipers make great bonsai trees because they are hardy and they are also great for jin bonsai trees. Jin bonsai is an art form wherein the bark of the trees are weathered or designed in such a way that it looks antiquated and almost like it can tell a story.

These types of bonsai trees are also very easy to grow and take full advantage of the sun. They are also capable of flowering very beautiful white dainty flowers. These types of bonsai trees also come in varying shades of green. They can adapt well to indoor life as well as outdoor exposure.

Pine Types Of Bonsai Trees

Pine trees are the types of bonsai trees that are hardy and very upright to grow. These types of bonsai trees need little attention except for the pruning and the cutting but as to sunlight and watering they are a hardy variety. Some of the more popular types of bonsai trees are Japanese black pine and Five Needle pine.

Other Conifer Species

Other conifer types of bonsai trees usually used includes spruces and cypresses. These are just as hardy as the other types of coniferous trees and just as dignified when matured.
