Bonsai trees conjure feelings of serenity and peace, however they do take a lot of time and effort to grow and cultivate. Bonsai gardening is an art form that originated in Asia and has been around for several centuries. Patience and practice are required to progress form beginner to bonsai artist. There is a lot of knowledge required to master the art of cultivating a bonsai tree. Let’s start with the basics.

Fertile soil and the right pots are required to successfully begin your practice of bonsai gardening. Just as important is selecting the proper tree. There are several varieties of bonsai trees and some are better suited for bonsai cultivation than others. A hardy tree is an excellent chioce for a beginner!

Choosing the Right Tree

The Japanese Snowdrop is the recommended bonsai tree for a novice gardener. This tree is hardy and excels when outdoors under the full sun. Maintenance and upkeep are fairly easy, water it well and make sure that the ball root system does not dry out completely. Yearly pruning is required for the Japanese Snowdrop and you will need to constantly monitor the roots.

Another popular choice among beginner bonsai gardeners is the Japanese Pagoda. It is relatively easy to maintain and grow. This bonsai tree will appreciate full sun with some partial shade as well as keeping the roots damp most of the time. It does not like it too hot or dry. Bonsai gardening requires that the ball root system not be allowed to dry up completely. As an extra bonus, the Japanese Pagoda flowers beautifully during seasons.

Tips And Tricks For Bonsai Gardening

As you search for your perfect tree to begin your bonsai garden, remember that not all species of bonsai trees have the same preferences for watering and sun exposure. You must be aware of the needs of your specific bonsai plants to be successful in bonsai gardening.

Bonsai trees will need to be repotted regularly at least every one to three years. This helps to maintain the roots and keep them free from pests and other threats to their root system.

Bonsai gardening will also require training of the tree. Training means that the branches and twigs of the tree need to be wired and kept in place with special branch benders.

Bonsai gardening is not an isntant gratification hobby. It takes a lot of time, effort and patience to master. Bonsai gardening is an artform that will reward you with a beautiful tree to cherish for years to come.
